Install the FiveM client
Before you can write a single line of Lua you need a working FiveM. Ten minutes here removes 90% of the "nothing works" feeling later. You will download FiveM.exe, point it at your real GTA5.exe, let it cache the game data once, and sign in with Cfx.re so every server can verify it is you.

Download the FiveM client
Only ever download FiveM from the official site. Sites that advertise "FiveM cracked" or "FiveM free" are malware or banned mirrors, and Cfx.re locks any account that signs in from a forked client.
Open this URL in your browser:
https://fivem.net/Click the Download Client button, read the Creator Platform License Agreement, then click Sure, I Agree!. The download starts and you end up with one file:
Downloads/FiveM.exeRun the installer and point it at GTA5.exe
Double-click FiveM.exe. If Windows shows a SmartScreen warning, click More info, then Run anyway.
When FiveM asks for your game, browse to your GTA V folder and select GTA5.exe. The default folders are:
Steam: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V\
Epic: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\GTAV\
Rockstar: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V\Pick GTA5.exe, not PlayGTAV.exe. They sit side by side in the same folder and are easy to mix up. PlayGTAV.exe is the launcher shortcut; is the real game binary FiveM needs. Click to confirm.
If something went wrong

Stuck on "updating game data" | Patch GTA V fully from your store, add a FiveM exception in your antivirus, and confirm you have 5 GB free, then re-run. |
The Welcome screen never appears after Authorize | Your browser blocked the redirect or a session cookie. Re-open FiveM, click Sign in with Cfx.re again, and finish authorizing in the window FiveM opened (do not paste the URL into a different browser). |
FiveM crashes the second it opens | Update your GPU drivers from the vendor site, then disable game overlays (Discord, RivaTuner, Razer, AMD Adrenalin) for FiveM. |
What you can do now
- Explain that FiveM is a separate launcher that uses your legal GTA V to join community servers.
- Install FiveM from fivem.net and point it at GTA5.exe, not PlayGTAV.exe.
- Describe what Cfx.re is and what authorizing the launcher actually grants.
- Open the F8 console and run connect 127.0.0.1:30120 to reach a local server later.
- Find FiveM's cache and logs under %LocalAppData%\FiveM\ when something fails.
